Topic: Tax Policy and the Special Needs family
Speaker: Priscilla N. Myerson, CPA, MBA ofMyerson & Myerson, CPA's
Special Guest: Edward J. Myerson, CPA, MBA, CVA of Myerson & Myerson, CPA's

What are the key questions on your mind as a family with special needs, and tax season on the horizon?  Have you deducted the allowable costs of special education and/or related supports for the child under medical expenses?  For what diagnoses and circumstances?  How do you interpret IRS Publication 502 for children with special needs?  What if your child attends a private school in order to receive special services or an adaptive curriculum?  What about private therapies such as speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, ABA and other areas of specialization?  Does this include counselors and mental health professionals?  What about resources for remediation, educational tools, parent training and conferences?  What about unreimbursed medical expenses for medical care, appointments, tests, equipment and medications?  Could the cost of educational consultants, advocacy or legal fees count toward the threshold for deduction?  What expenses are considered deductible for this tax year?  What supporting documentation is required?

About our Group

Special Needs in DVCC and Regency provides support, information and resources to local families with special needs.  This community group was established by a parent of special needs in 2009, and has grown to 25 members and an expert Advisor, Ellen Korin.  Presently, we function as a volunteer organization.
Ellen Korin and her husband will be relocating from New England to Dominion Valley in 2012.  Ellen is a special educator, and an expert in Autism Spectrum Disorders.  She is an award-winning author on Asperger Syndrome, and is respected by those in her field and in the broader community of Special Needs.  Ellen has kindly offered to support those in our group, and she can be reached as follows: ekorin@rcn.com

We are also exploring an architecture for Special Needs in greater Piedmont dedicated to enriching the quality of life for those with disabilities in Haymarket and Gainesville, Virginia.  This new organization would operate as a broader umbrella to our existing Special Needs group in Dominion Valley and Regency, and other grassroots efforts in the local community.  Several groups already exist and we are hoping to find synergy as we work toward common objectives.  These affiliated networks will be included in our upcoming events and initiatives.

If you are connected to families impacted by Special Needs in our community that could benefit from our affiliated networks, we hope you might share this correspondence with them.

Meet Ellen KorinAsperger Syndrome: An Owner's Manual 2

Order the 2008 Hidden Curriculum Calendar today for only $10Hello all,

The long-awaited Asperger Syndrome: An Owner's Manual 2 has finally arrived. This interactive workbook is derived from my work with adolescents and adults on the autism spectrum, primarily those with Asperger Syndrome and nonverbal learning disabilities. It is a sequel to my earlier book, Asperger Syndrome-An Owner's Manual: What You, Your Parents, and Your Teachers Need to Know, for young people in grades 5 to 8.

I have learned through my work that, despite a common diagnosis, people on the spectrum are extremely diverse, each possessing a unique profile. I have also discovered that much of what is not intuitive for persons on the spectrum can be learned. (Read more from Ellen ...)
